Deep listening

I have noticed a beautiful practice of a person I know: the consistent practice of deep listening. This person listens deeply to hear and to learn. I see evidence that his deep listening inspires his reflections and teachings, and am truly grateful for this practice that he quietly and actively employs.

"Hear and understand.” (Matthew 15:10)
When I observe a deep listener in conversation, for example, I see a person who is actively engaged in the conversation by openly listening and hearing the words, the voice and the intention of the person who is sharing; and allowing what is heard and experienced to resonate deeply within, with the goal of learning and understanding.

I greatly admire this quality and practice. Today I would like to explore this further, so that I, myself, might gain knowledge on deep listening and practice it in my living faith.

Principles and practices for deep listening:
. listen to learn
. listen for understanding rather than agreement
. ask powerful questions

"Deep listening is a process of listening to learn. It requires the temporary suspension of judgment, and a willingness to receive new information – whether pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral.”
In prayer we speak, in meditation we listen. I shall listen and reflect a while on this topic.
