"Expandism is a mental exercise, focusing on details, working with concentration, seeking for unhurried moments in the middle of everyday life, pursuing flow-experience, meditating, contemplating, making a creative journey, revealing the art work, searching for hidden form and adventure where the end result is not known in advance." ~ Pekka Hannula

My first zen doodle

Original meditation illustration by me. Montreal June 2015. Pencil on paper. :)

I felt like learning something new, and had stumbled upon this style of meditation online. And so, I took pencil to paper... and look what happened :) It's called meditative drawing, zen doodle or zen tangle. The idea is, instead of art which starts with an idea, meditative drawing begins with details and expands outward...

Listening to music and just chilling out, I spent about an hour on this drawing. To me it looks kind of natural-futuristic-fairy-world, which I really like. There is an intriguing sense of depth, which I love.

My first attempt: I really liked it. I truly got lost in time and space, and loved the building process of the drawing without expectation for a particular outcome. I'll definately try this again as a peaceful and creative activity. It was a really nice way to spend a rainy afternoon, learning something new.

Try it for yourself? Google image: zen doodle. Let me know how it goes...

Blessings,

Aaron
